Aeron office chairs were introduced in the market in the year1994 by Herman Miller. The launch of the product did really revolutionize the market and changed the concept of office seating drastically. It’s in the market since last 13 years touching new heights at regular interval as the best known office chair available. Some of the religious critics of the product rejected it as unattractive but surpassing all of its criticism it went on to win the heart of the people world over along with numerous design awards.
The most significant point of difference with the Aeron office chairs is the use of Pellicle instead of traditional upholstery. The traditional upholstery with padded foams finished in either fabric or leather had been around in the market since quite long time, use of the pellicle was a totally new concept introduced by Herman Miller to devise a new vision for office seat upholstery. The pellicle is a distinctive form of open mesh upholstery that efficiently took the place of the conventional padding as its strength and durability offered by pellicle outclassed the same qualities of the conventional seat and back pad framing, foam and fabric. The pellicle is a material that is able to move for supporting the user’s body with ability to return to its original shape when not in use.
In the year 2001 Aeron introduced another feature to its office chairs that was PostureFit. The concept of PostureFit aeron chair was developed into its final shape with the help of a leading back care specialist, Dr Brock Walker. They jointly designed such a support system to give appropriate support to the user’s lower back region and it was also ensured that the spine and back is automatically correctly aligned and supported while using the PostureFit mechanism. PostureFit mechanism made it easier to sit correctly as the mechanism helps to balance your weight to rest against the butterfly pad of PostureFit. Drawback of this feature was that it was not made the standard feature of the Aeron office chairs instead it was made as add on feature. One of the main distracter Aeron has is that it requires quite a long process of initial setting to get customized everything exactly for the individual user which makes it unfit for sharing with others.
The competitors are not just been sitting idle, they are on their task and there are a number of exceptional chairs that pose a serious challenge to the superior position of Aeron in the market. Other manufacturers are continuously trying to develop the simplification of chair adjustment process. Some of the companies like HÅG of Norway and Humanscale have already developed a method of automatic weight adjustment. They have tried their level best to make the process of weight adjustment as simple as possible. On the other hand Steelcase has introduced the LiveBack mechanism; it is designed in such a way that it changes shape to support the entire spine.
So, days are not far when some of the competitor would catch up to the top ergonomic office chair position still being held by Aeron.
